About This Project

Magyar Maniac was born from a distance runner aiming to complete their first half-marathon. This individual adopted the name as their “running name, ” paying tribute to their Hungarian heritage. “Maygar” translates to “Hungarian” in the language, and “Maniac” helps them explain their mindset and love affair with distance running. The alliteration in the name makes the moniker catchy and memorable.

The client wanted something edgy and fun, so I immediately knew I wanted to opt for gothic text, as it’s bold and creates a subtle nod toward the ancestral roots as Hungary is one of the oldest countries in Europe. Pulling from their history, I wanted to incorporate the country’s crown in some sort of way. The crown was damaged in the 17th century, but the damage created an iconic look with the crooked cross. I decided to use a simplified silhouette of the crown as the superscript dot on the “i” in maniac. The result is a logo mark that is bold and authentic, allowing it to stand out against a multitude of backgrounds.
